Origin & background

  • ‘Martin’ is a cultivar derived from Thiessen.
  • Selected by Dieter Martin in Saskatchewan, Canada.
  • It is widely used in Canada for commercial cultivation and by hobbyists due to its large fruit and uniform ripening.

Characteristics

  • Hardiness (zone)
    • Approximately zone 2a-3-3a, indicating good tolerance to extreme cold.
  • Size
    • At maturity, approximately 3-5 m tall × ~3-4 m wide for well-developed specimens. Some sources give ~2-4 m.
  • Habit & vegetation
    • Upright, multi-stemmed shrub with a fairly erect habit. Foliage is green in summer and turns red-orange in fall.
  • Flowering
    • White flowers in spring (April-May depending on climate).
  • Fruit
    • Relatively large berries for an amelanchier, dark blue/purple when ripe. Very good for fresh consumption, cooking, jellies, etc. Sweet taste, sometimes with hints of almond.
  • Fruit maturity/harvest
    • Fairly early among varieties. Harvest in early to mid-summer (June to July depending on region).
  • Soil/conditions
    • Prefers cool, well-drained soil. Can tolerate several soil types (sandy, loamy). Full sun to partial shade. Fairly adaptable once well established.

Advantages

  • Uniform ripening: Berries ripen fairly simultaneously, which simplifies harvesting.
  • Fruit size: Among the largest for Saskatoon berries/alder-leaved serviceberries.
  • Hardiness: Highly resistant to cold, making it suitable for boreal climates or cold regions in Canada.
  • Versatility: Good for small fruit orchards, fruit hedges, or as a decorative shrub. Ornamental foliage, beautiful flowers.

Challenges and things to watch for

  • Late frost/flowering: Because flowering occurs relatively early, there is a risk of frost damage if late frosts persist in your area.
  • Drought tolerance: Although it is hardy, productivity will be better if the soil remains cool, especially during fruit development. Periods of dry heat can affect quality or quantity if there is not enough water.
  • Production vs. age: Like many serviceberries, the plants take a few years to reach maximum production. A few fruits appear after 1-3 years, but a significant harvest occurs after about 3-5 years.

  • 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a
