🌳 Origin and Type

  • Botanical name: Ficus carica ‘Little Ruby’
  • Origin: a relatively recent variety, selected for small spaces
  • Type: common fig (self-fertile)
→ does not require pollination to produce fruit.

🍈 The Fruit

  • Color: red to deep purple
  • Flesh: intense red
  • Flavor: sweet, rich, slightly honeyed with berry notes
  • Size: small to medium
  • Texture: juicy and tender

👉 Unlike Desert King, Little Ruby produces:

  • one main crop (late summer / early fall)
  • but it is usually abundant and consistent

🌿 Key Feature

👉 Its biggest advantage: compact size

  • Height: about 5 to 8 ft (1.5 to 2.5 m)
  • Width: similar
  • Shape: dense and rounded

➡️ Ideal for:

  • small gardens
  • container growing
  • patios and balconies

❄️ Hardiness and Climate

  • Hardiness: about 10 to 5 °F (-12 to -15 °C) (with protection)
  • Less hardy than Desert King
  • Prefers:
    • warm summers
    • sheltered locations

👉 In colder climates, it often needs:

  • to be grown in containers
  • or winter protection (brought indoors or heavily mulched)

🌱 Growing and Care

  • ☀️ Sun: full sun
  • 🌱 Soil: light, well-drained
  • 💧 Watering:
    • regular, especially in containers
    • do not let soil dry out completely
  • ✂️ Pruning:
    • easy to manage
    • responds well to pruning (helps keep it compact)

👉 Very well suited for container growing 👍

⭐ Strengths

  • Compact and ornamental
  • Perfect for small spaces
  • Good productivity for its size
  • Self-fertile (beginner-friendly)
  • Excellent for pots

⚠️ Weaknesses

  • Less cold-hardy than some varieties
  • Smaller fruits
  • Not ideal for very cold climates without protection
  • May require more frequent watering in containers

Hardiness Zones

  • 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a

Light

  • Full-sun
