Cornus florida 'Rubra', known in English as pink flowering dogwood, is a small deciduous ornamental tree native to North America. It is particularly valued for its spectacular pink bloom in spring.

Characteristics

  • Mature height: 5 to 8 meters.
  • Width: 4 to 8 meters.
  • Flowering: April to May, with large pale pink to deep pink bracts surrounding the actual small flowers.
  • Foliage: Green in summer, turning purplish-red to scarlet in autumn.
  • Fruits: Small decorative red drupes, appreciated by birds.
  • Habit: Spreading and elegant, with branches arranged in tiers.

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Soft sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Moist, rich in organic matter, well-drained, and slightly acidic.
  • Watering: Regular during the first years and during dry periods.
  • Hardiness: Approximately down to -25 °C (zone 5), but young plants may require winter protection in colder regions.

Garden Uses

  • Specimen tree in a small garden.
  • Planted as a solitary feature on a lawn.
  • Integration into a woodland or natural style garden.
  • Ornamental interest throughout the four seasons thanks to its flowers, autumnal colors, and fruits.
