LORD male sea buckthorn

General information & origin

  • “Eva” is a female variety of sea buckthorn.
  • It is believed to be the result of a cross between Finnish and Russian sea buckthorn populations.

Main characteristics

  • Size/growth habit
    • Reaches approximately 2-3 meters when mature, according to several sources.
Others mention a greater height (~12-15 feet ≈ 3.5-4.5 m) depending on vigor and conditions.
  • Thorns
    • Variety with few thorns, which makes harvesting easier.
  • Foliage
  • Silver-green leaves, fairly typical of sea buckthorns, with a silvery hue on the underside.
  • Fruit/berries
    • Color: bright yellow-orange.
    • Taste: slightly tart, very juicy, sweet-tart or well-balanced flavor.
    • Size/quantity: large, numerous berries. Eva is even said to have the highest polyphenol content recorded for any sea buckthorn variety.
  • Maturity/harvest
    • Harvested in August to September depending on the region.
    • Takes about 3 years to start producing significantly.
  • Hardiness/climate/soil
    • Withstands cold well, suited to harsh climates with short summers.
    • Well-drained soil, tolerates dry or poor soil, prefers full sun.

Strengths

  • Rich in polyphenols — ‘Eva’ stands out for its high polyphenol content, making it ideal for juices, jams, health products, and nutraceuticals.
  • Easy to harvest compared to other, more thorny varieties. Suitable for cold climates and relatively short summers.
  • Ornamental foliage and attractive appearance in addition to fruit production.

Limitations/things to consider

  • Requires cross-pollination: ‘Eva’ is female, so a male plant (or several, depending on the number of females) must be nearby to ensure fruit production.
  • Acidity/strongly tart taste depending on ripeness—for some, the taste may need to be adjusted (sweetening or processing) if a very tart taste is not desired. Production is not immediate—as with many sea buckthorns, it takes a few years (≈ 2-4) to get a good harvest.
  • Pruning and maintenance: although not very thorny, space, planting, pruning, plant health, etc. must be carefully managed.

Comparisons/special features

  • Compared to ‘Sunny’: ‘Eva’ is often compared to Sunny, with large, juicy fruit, but ‘Eva’ has the advantage of having fewer thorns.
  • According to a scientific journal, ‘Eva’ is mentioned as a Latvian variety with a high level of sugar dissolved in water, which makes it sweeter, especially when harvested late.

Growing tips

  • If you decide to grow it at home, here are a few tips based on the information available:
    1. Choose the right location: full sun, well-drained soil, avoid areas with standing water.
    2. Provide a male plant close enough for wind pollination (1 male for several females). Position this plant so that it is exposed to prevailing winds.
    3. Spacing: leave enough space (≈ 2-3 m between plants or more depending on vigor) so that the plants have room to develop properly.
    4. Winter protection: even though they are hardy, young plants can benefit from mulch or root protection during very harsh winters.
    5. Harvest: monitor ripeness to obtain the best balance between acidity and sugar, depending on use (fresh, juice, jams). Late-ripening fruits will often have a sweeter taste.
    6. Maintenance: prune to maintain shape, remove dead branches, promote aeration, and limit disease.
