Scientific name: Washingtonia filifera

Origin: California, Arizona, Nevada, northern Baja California

Common name: Skirt palm, California palm


🌿Description

Size: Can reach 15 to 20 meters in height at maturity.

Trunk: Thick, columnar, often covered at the base with dead leaves forming a kind of skirt (hence the name “skirt palm”).

Leaves: Fan-shaped (palmate), light green, with characteristic white filaments (hence the name filifera = “thread-bearing”).

Flowers: Small, whitish, in long inflorescences.

Fruits: Small, black, non-toxic and edible (not very sweet, sometimes used by indigenous peoples).

 

🌡️Hardiness and climate

Withstands -22°F, sometimes a little more in well-drained soil.

Likes heat and full sun.

Withstands drought well once well-rooted.


🌱Cultivation

Soil: Well-drained, tolerates poor and calcareous soils.

Exposure: Full sun.

Watering: Regular in summer for young plants; less frequent once mature.

Care: Prune dry leaves if you want a neater appearance, otherwise leave them for a more natural look (and to protect the trunk).
