Very rare collectible tree

Small tree or large shrub reaching 8 meters at maturity and producing small edible chestnuts but about half the size of those of the American Chestnut. It produces male flowers in white catkins like those of other chestnut trees. It is known to be more resistant to chestnut blight. This tree grows on calcareous, poor or sandy soils. In its native range of the United States, it is found in the central-East at high altitudes in the states crossed by the Appalachians. Pennsylvania is the northernmost state in its range. Its leaves are less ribbed and are smaller than the leaves of Castanea dentata. It has an interesting hardiness in zone 4b and is a good subject for collectors and developments requiring small trees.
