The Sand Cherry (Prunus pumila) is a low-growing, deciduous shrub native to North American sandy shores and dunes, typically reaching 1–2 meters in height. It features leathery, green, alternate leaves, fragrant white spring flowers, and small, astringent, dark purple-black fruit that ripen in summer, providing food for wildlife.

Key Characteristics and Description

  • Appearance: A sprawling or multi-stemmed shrub often forming clonal colonies via its root system. Young stems are reddish-brown, turning grey-brown with age.
  • Leaves: Simple, lance-shaped or elliptical, with serrated margins, appearing thick and waxy.
  • Flowers: Small (15–25 mm), white, five-petaled flowers with yellow stamens, blooming in clusters of 2 to 4 in spring.
  • Fruit: Small (1/3 to 1/2 inch) drupes that turn from red to shiny dark purple or black by July. They are edible but often bitter or acidic, popular with birds and mammals.
  • Varieties: There are several variations, including the Western Sand Cherry (P. pumila var. besseyi) and Susquehanna Sand Cherry (P. pumila var. susquehanae).

Growing Conditions and Habitat

  • Environment: Naturally found on sandy beaches, dunes, and rocky shores.
  • Light/Soil: Requires full sun to partial shade and prefers dry, sandy, or well-drained soil.
  • Tolerances: Highly drought-tolerant once established and very winter-hardy.

Uses and Maintenance

  • Landscape: Excellent for erosion control on sandy banks and as an accent plant.
  • Wildlife: Acts as a host for various butterflies and moths and provides food for birds.
  • Maintenance: Generally low maintenance, but susceptible to pests like aphids, borers, and diseases like leaf spot and cankers, often having a limited lifespan of about 10–15 years.

Distinction from Similar Species
The Purple Leaf Sand Cherry (Prunus × cistena) is a hybrid with a deeper, crimson-purple leaf color throughout the summer, while the native Sand Cherry (Prunus pumila) typically has green leaves
