📚 What is JB-30?

  • Amelanchier alnifolia ‘JB-30’ is a cultivar of Saskatoon/Juneberry. It can be found in specialized nurseries in Western Canada and the Prairies.
  • It is a shrubby/shrubby-arboreal fruit plant that produces “berries” (amelanchier-type apples) with a very pleasant taste, used fresh, in pastries, or in jams.

Main characteristics

  • Hardiness
    • Very high. Zones 2 to 7 (or higher depending on conditions) — therefore well suited to cold climates.
  • Adult size
    • Approximately 3.4 m high and 1.5 m wide with a vertical shape.
  • Fruit
    • Medium to fairly large berries for this type (≈ 15 mm in diameter), blue-purple in color when fully ripe, very good taste.
  • Yield
    • Considered high and consistent. Productivity becomes good fairly early on with age.
  • Flowering
    • Blooms in spring (~ April) depending on the region.
  • Harvest
    • Mid-July to early August depending on the region.
  • Taste/sugar
    • Juicy, very tasty. Slightly less sweet than some other cultivars according to some sources, but well balanced.

⚠️ Limitations and points to watch out for

  • Although “self-fertile” in some cases (i.e., a single plant can produce fruit), JB-30 yields better results if there are two or more plants nearby.
  • The total sugar content of the fruit is slightly lower than some other very sweet varieties. If you are looking for a very sweet fruit for cooking or dessert, others may be more suitable.
  • As with many serviceberries, the soil must be well-drained and well-exposed to the sun for good ripening. Less suitable in very wet or poorly exposed soils. (This is implied in the descriptions of maximum yield and quality).

🌿 Recommended uses

  • Fresh consumption: pick and eat directly.
  • Jams, pies, berries, desserts, artisanal products.
  • Planting in fruit hedges or berry orchards. JB-30 is reasonably sized, so it may also be suitable for edible landscaping.
  • Attracts biodiversity: flowers in spring, fruit that attracts birds/insects.

Hardiness Zones

  • 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a
