With its light foliage and generous flowering, the rowan tree is very decorative in spring but it is its brilliantly colored fruiting which makes it remarkable in autumn and winter. An easy-going tree that brightens up the garden during the bad season.
Belonging to the Rosaceae family and the Sorbus genus which brings together more than a hundred species, the rowan or rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) is a small tree 5 to 8m high, very branched with an upright habit and the rounded top. Its branches with light gray bark, cracked in old plants, bear dark green compound leaves whose edges are toothed.
In May-June, the mountain ash is covered with corymbs of creamy white flowers which then give way to clusters of round fruits, rowan berries, which turn pink, orange or light red from July depending on the variety and persist on the tree. until December if the birds do not enjoy it before (read also: Shrubs for small birds). The flesh of rowan berries is edible once chard but the seeds they contain are toxic.
