The bur oak is probably the hardiest oak in Quebec, probably surpassing the red oak in hardiness. Its leaves with several variations of shapes are very pretty. It grows well in zone 3a and easily tolerates -35°C or even -40°C. It has a majestic appearance with its branches often twisted and sometimes even corky crests. Rounded in shape, it can become very imposing, reaching a maximum of 30 meters in height in a forest environment but less in an open environment. It is the most widespread oak in Ontario and the second most widespread in Quebec in a natural environment. It grows well in several varieties of deep soils. Its wood is of great value. It is very recommended for windbreak hedges with 2 or 3 rows, the enrichment of woodlands with clearance, for a place in a park or a large plot of land and for its renaturalization. It is not considered rare in southern Quebec but would benefit from being planted more for its durability and resistance to insects and diseases. Bur oak can survive forest fires thanks to its very thick bark. It also tolerates drought because its roots go deep into the soil.
