The Pawpaw is a strange little tree; this genus is only found in North America and the species is the only tree species. It is native to Southwestern Ontario and the United States where it grows sporadically here and there and is never very common. It produces an edible fruit up to 12 cm long resembling a mango. It produces large solitary purple flowers that are very pretty in spring with a strong scent. From there, the strange fruits grow with the pleasant taste of banana and mango. Its foliage is very dense and decorative and really gives it a tropical look. It is an ornamental tree which has a very high value for its beauty, its rarity and the edible fruits that it will produce. Ideally plant 2 to 3 plants for pollination. Hand pollination may be advisable. Suitable at least in warm zone 4b with protection of a building or a hedge if possible. See details of its hardiness and other information on the technical sheet.
